Spring Collection

So revolving members of Fashion Launches Rocket Launches include two Mercy Arms, a Lost Valentino, and a Midnight Juggernaut.

Check 'em out if your feeling some gritty, subterranean, surf-rock stylin' tunes to start your week. Do it!

And from the band themselves:

"Fashion Lunches Rocket Launches is a musical project aimed at eliminating the inherent egos, fundamental flaws & seemingly unavoidable, often cliché problems of bands as we know them."

A dig at someone? Sigh..

Shirtsleeves

Items to have appeared in my pockets this evening include a bandanna, a pebble bequeathed to me by a friend convinced it was the sharpest in the world, and a credit card giving me $12 teapots at World Bar until 2010.

In the process of collecting these, Under Lights made Club 77 their own, Papa vs. Pretty delighted an energetically effusive fanbase and Bridezilla played a somewhat indescernable, yet happily alluring midnight hour.

Anyways, havent posted much music lately - so here are a few gems to bring in the week. One of these is a bona fida jam; a terrific and elusive cover from those Perth lads who put on such a good show last Wednesday.

Remember Me - Tame Impala

The other stands alone as an absolute heartbreaker.

Half Glass Full of Wine

So how good are Tame Impala?

Well if you listen to their record label they are the greatest band on the face of the planet. Thats a pretty big call- but they are from Perth (exotic!), and they are playing tomorrow night in Bondi- at the best Wednesday night gig in town (sorry sheafies).

So yeah, I did really like their EP - and so long as these guys arent overplayed before they really mark their mark, then a promising debut album beckons for sure.

Theyre on at 10, but you could always check out Sherlocks Daughter at 9- cos they'll be good too.

Wednesday 25th March- Tame Impala at the Beach Rd Hotel- FREE

Around the traps

Out last week was an outstanding mix tape by montreal producer Tor, who paired a bunch of Sufjan Stevens instrumentals with a selection of hip hop jams. The whole tape is up for free download from the dudes website, and for all you budding producers out is a great lesson in the ways of the mash-up. Real cool stuff. [More]

The Dress Looks Nice on You / Make You Feel That Way (f. Gift of Gab) - Tor/ Sufjan Stevens

More Montreal to surface recently was the Jeremy Gara (under his Fingers moniker) remix of The Acorn's folktastic Crooked Legs. Gara in his spare time drums with a little band called Arcade Fire but here takes a different direction from his most well known work, throwing the original track completely out the window to land us an ethereal, dreamy, percussive kind of groove.

Crooked Legs (Jeremy Gara Remix)- The Acorn

Also, everyone should go check out the new Whitest Boy Alive album which also officially dropped last week. Another strong collection of sweetly struck accoustica from Erland and the boys, first deliveries of the German outfit's second LP Rules have been selling like hot cakes, so much so that i managed to pinch the last copy set aside for the manager of my local record store.

One of the standout jams Island was put up for free download a few weeks ago, have a listen then buy it for real!

A Mouthfull of Gold

A feature on the brilliant new Seekae album should throw some more of the limelight on Sydney band Ghoul. Singer Ivan Vizintin lends his bold-cum-quivering (think Antony Hegarty melodies against Talking Heads-era David Byrne) vocals on that track 'Wool'.

At less than twenty minutes listening time, Ghoul's debut 2008 EP coallesces nine tracks- generally each an atmospheric, minimalist electronic melody-based piece. The band's talent is that together these form an lush, stirring and intriguing soundscape.

Think the sparse precision of Cornelius, echoing Liers-style percussion, and of course those striking vocals (as mentioned, invariably but not injustifibaly reminiscent of Hegarty and Byrne).

Swimming Pool - Ghoul

A captivating release, essential Sydney listening you could say! Especially (for now) offered for free download on the band's myspace.

Catch as well these guys at the Hopetoun on Sunday, just before they steal away into the night for a while. (On the topic, it seems Diamond Back Rattler have played their last show- devo to have missed them at 77).
